3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Great book/CD but description is misleading By Bass957 This is a good collection of bluegrass standards to play along with. It is part of a series covering the various instruments in a bluegrass outfit. Regarding the bass book, the general description ("The artist plays a basic solo that states the melody of the tune, then a more adventurous improvisation, and each solo is transcribed in detail.") just does not apply. There is no bass improvisation, solo or solo transcription in here, just a basic bass line that repeats over and over. I am transitioning from electric to upright bass, and I was looking for material to play along with, and this book/CD does the job very well.

I started with various DVD's that were essentially worthless. Then, through sheer luck, i got a copy of the Blue Grass Jam-Along. Heaven. Pure heaven. It's a five star band along with clean, accurate sheet music and a great selection of songs.It helps if you have a playback system with a balance control so that the bass line can be isolated if need be. An Eiki 8080 is perfect for this. Phillips' bass lines are not just the usual I-V, and the tags are delicious. There are even a couple of waltzes.The only dis is without tab it's hard to know where to play the patterns. But i guess if you follow the rule of closed chords then there's not a lot of choice.i can't wait for VOLUME II. Hear me Leonard ?
1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Good play-along CD By Amazon Customer The "ALL STAR BLUEGRASS JAM-ALONG FOR BASS" book was a disappointment. After getting the book/Cd. This play along book/CD can be used by any instrument and is NOT just for bass. The book has music treble & bass but NO TAB. This is a big one! Most Bluegrass musicians play/read tab. Many read music, as I, but play tab. If you purchase this book for bass, which I did, you MUST generate your own tab. This isn't easy but can be done. I used another bass book titled "Bluegrass Bass" by Ritchie Mintz to establish notes to string stops and then generated the tab.The tunes are common and about the right speed. The band/musicians are also pretty good. Good CD to play along with and a good addition, although the book is useless.
