Comprehensive and clear--functions as a reference as well as a workbook By Audrey Kalman As a professional editor, I feel as if I ought to be able to write a book like this myself. But I could never match the depth of knowledge and the clear way it's presented in Miller's workbook. This would be a great way to learn the rules of English grammar for the first time. It's also great as a reference and for those of us who are "intuitive grammarians"--that is, we know when something is right or not right, but have no idea why!I particularly like Chapter 11, "Some Really Important Grammar Issues." These are ideas that can actually help you become a more effective communicator, not simply a follower of grammatical rules. The chapter looks at things like run-on sentences, misplaced modifiers, and parallel structure. If you don't know why those are important, read this book!(Full disclosure: I received an electronic copy of this book to review from the author. However, I found it so useful I am planning to purchase a paper copy for reference while editing.)

Whether you want a grammar review, a reference guide or a teaching tool, this workbook is the only book you will need. The logical and clear progression from basic grammar skills to more complex grammatical proficiency makes this workbook an exceptional educational tool. To assure skill mastery, each chapter offers a pre-test and post-test. I would suggest the companion book “The Best Little Grammar Book Ever” as an additional resource.

By Natasha The Best Grammar Workbook Ever is a powerbook for teachers and students: teachers to use it in class and students for self-study, because of the provided answers in Appendix 6. Although short, practice tests give a hint whether students need more explanation or not. The chapter tests have a variety of exercises, such as, matching, identifying, writing and rewriting sentences, filling in gaps, labeling, adding, choosing between options, correcting and the inevitable multiple choice. The language used for explaining rules is simple enough to be easily understood. Recommendations, what to use and what not to use including when and where, are exemplified which gives students clear-cut direction to better express themselves. I especially like the chapter about commas because in my native language (Macedonian) some of the rules of using commas are quite different. Additionally, use of italics is neglected, but this book gives straightforward answer when to use it. The list of commonly confused words is user-friendly because it is divided into groups according to the first letter of the word. The appendixes are also useful for a quick reference when necessary. Finally, the glossary of the grammar terms is self-explanatory. This grammar workbook is one of the best that I have come across, and I have always wondered why writers do not use more graphics, pictures or color in their grammar books!Natasha
