Great study guide minus a few things By Erik I finished studying the fourth edition and found this edition had recently been published so I decided to give it a shot. The questions are extremely thorough, comprehensive, and I have been able to gain additional knowledge. However, the book is riddled with spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors as well as some misinformation. Only having studied half of the book so far I have found enough errors to raise some concern. While this may very well be due to poor editing and proof reading it does lead one to wonder. One question labeled Anthracyclines as chemoprotective agents and Amifostine as a "cytoprotectand". Another answer reads "The other options are not chemotherapy regimens associated with a high risk of myelotoxicity. The other options are chemotherapy regimens associated with a high risk of myelotoxicity." Which is it? I did find the rationales to the answers to be more detailed then the fourth edition which I really liked. There are also a bevy of select all that apply questions (yuck!) to really make you think! At any rate the book is full of very useful information and questions that will really test your nursing knowledge in oncology however if you cringe at the site of overwhelming grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors you will have to grin and bear it through.***UPDATE*** August 2015I have since passed the OCN and looking back on the content of the book relative to the overall exam I believe you would be better off with the older edition. However this book still has plenty of good questions and some not so good (too many select all that apply questions are offered in this book).

By miss joanna r juntila I took this test last year using the OLD STUDY GUIDE .. and obviously did not past .. I took this test in September using the CURRENT GUIDE and TOTALLY PASSED!!! I would definitely recommend this book as a study guide prior to taking the OCN. Here are my recommendations to help YOU pass this test. There are about 42 Chapters in this study. Mostly study questions with the rationales. Some of the rationales are great rationales. Some are statistical rationales so they are not going to give you a "WHY" answer. The best way to study to start studying for this test is to know when your test date is. My test date was September 11. (I know! Not the best date but ironically it was the only available date to take a test). When I scheduled it back in July, I literally did 4 Chapters a week. If you break it down its really not that bad. Some chapters will need more days than others. Pharmacology was pretty darn long FYI! All in all, it took me about 2-3 months of just breaking down THIS BOOK .. If you do it this way, you should have a week or two left where you can focus on Chapters you feel like you may need more reviewing in.A lot of the questions in this book are very DETAILED. With that much said, a lot of the question on the EXAM are very BROAD. The questions in this book will go into detail (paragraphs even!) about a case study like, "Patient age 60 female named Cathy with stage 4 breast cancer comes in to the clinic feeling blah blah blah" .. where the exam is more one sentence like Patient with breast cancer has symptoms of blah blah blah .. Pay attention to this and engrain it in your head .. It will help you .. I remember taking my test and thinking oh I remember the book talking about a patient so and so ..Bottom line, give yourself at least 2-3 months .. Pace yourself. 3-4 chapters a week prior to the test.. YOU CAN DO IT! YOU ARE SMART AND YOU HAVE EXPERIENCE!

Honestly, I would recommend saving your money and buying the older version of the book. I used the older version to study before I found out about this version. I thought I should use this version since its based on the most recent blueprint. After taking the actual OCN exam, I realized the questions in this book were way harder than the actual test. (Which can be good depending on how frustrated you want to get, because I sure felt like a loser for getting so many questions wrong.) I'm not sure why they added multiple answer questions in the book, there's nothing like that in the exam. Also, the grammar on the answers is sometimes off. There were times I was reading rationals and I couldn't tell if the answer on the key was wrong or the rational was wrong.
