A How To Think Better book that actually delivers By Alan Nitikman I know Betsy Speicher and some of her previous writing, but this is her first full-length book. I greatly enjoyed the book and its novel approach to self-help through the practical application of philosophy to the problems of life. It is obviously intended for an intelligent lay reader, not a philosopher. It uses simple, accessible examples with believable characters facing real-world problems. She focuses on the patterns of thought required to solve these problems and takes you through the process, with humor and insight. By the time you've worked your way from the simple issues in early chapters to the more complex problems the book builds up to, it becomes clear that these are the kinds of mental habits that will lead to a more effective life. As simple and straightforward as the method appears, it has great power. Recommended.

Boldly promises wisdom, and then delivers By John Paquette In this self-described "ultimate how-to book," it says on the first page of Chapter 1: "Knowing WHY is the key to success and happiness."It then goes into a profound, yet surprisingly easy-to-read discussion of what "why" means, why we ask "why" questions, etc. Ultimately, it shows you the "how" of achieving any goal or solving any problem in life (hint: it involves learning WHY).Of course, such a small book isn't about the thousands of *details* involved in solving life's problems, but it gives you an amazing amount of general wisdom regarding such tasks as keeping a clear goal in life, achieving complex tasks, learning from your errors, being creative, remembering (and recalling) what's most important, dealing properly with one's emotions, finding reliable experts or consultants, convincing others, and even raising happy, successful children. The book is replete with examples which illustrate the principles it teaches. The examples are as simple as a boy trying to get a cookie from his mother, to a detective trying to solve a murder case, to a software project manager trying to deliver a product on time at a company where there are political obstacles. The examples are well-written, in the manner of engaging fiction. You'll find yourself wondering what will happen next. This is not a typical self-help or how-to book. You won't be overwhelmed with concrete advice like "get up early and exercise 30 minutes before you go to work." Instead, you'll get a really good understanding of how your mind can work most effectively in all manner of situations (social, emotional, analytical, creative, pedagogical, persuasive, etc).If there's one core idea to the book, it's the basic nature of causes and effects--that understanding causes and effects requires thinking about Things and their Characteristics (yes, the book even capitalizes these words to emphasize just how important they are). When I was done reading this book, I thought: Betsy Speicher seems to be the good mother many people never had--the kind who really knows how to respect the nature of a child's mind, and who knows what kinds of things are most important to learn and to teach (hint: blindly obeying your parents isn't one of them). This is the kind of book which I'd recommend to any person, but especially to a young person who is about to embark on the great journey of life. It's a book which provides a method for navigating human existence, stated in such plain language a 12-year-old could understand it.Highly recommended.

Why we must ask Why By Gary James Judd “Myself when young did eagerly frequentDoctor and Saint, and heard great ArgumentAbout it and about: but evermoreCame out by the same Door as in I went.”That stanza from the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam encapsulates what I felt when many years ago at university I spent a year on philosophy. Its uselessness made it the low point of my academic studies. The only paper of any worth was Logic. As to the rest — a mixture of mysticism and fantasy unconnected to reality.By contrast anyone who reads this little book will not come out by the same door as they went in. Not only will they gain insights concerning the way in which man is connected to reality but by doing so will also be assisted to find for themselves the way to “success and happiness”.One of the most pernicious features of our times is the acceptance of assertions simply because they are made — without any attempt to verify their accuracy. For example the prevailing ideology in relation to the global economy is that more inflation is needed and that deflation is bad. Only a few years ago the spectre of inflation loomed large and the ideology then was that it had to be restrained. Now central bankers, so-called economists, policymakers, politicians and others prattle on about the evil of deflation. They want prices to go up!Those in a position to do so seek to promote inflation by increasing the money supply.Betsy Speicher says at Location 138: You need to know WHY when learning from others. “You can’t be completely certain of anything you learn from others until and unless you understand why they say what they do. You haven’t really mastered the material until you’ve derived or verified it yourself and understand why it’s true.”Why does price deflation occur? When you engage in introspection you can understand. It can occur only because an increase in the production of goods and services outweighs any increase in the money supply. As money is a medium of exchange to facilitate the exchange of goods and services, if the quantity of goods and services increases and the money supply doesn’t the general price level must decrease. If the money supply increases that may prevent the general price level decreasing and if it increases sufficiently it may result in the general price level increasing. Why can it be bad — evil — for prices to decrease? People whose incomes are fixed or falling will obtain some compensation because of lower prices. This is beneficial to people moving out of or reducing involvement in the workforce whether to retirement or because of technological improvements reducing employment opportunities. This is why I would say that deflation is not evil. Deflation is good. But Betsy Speicher’s message is that you don’t take that from anyone without seeking to derive or verify for yourself and understand that it’s true, if it is.This is a small demonstration of the general importance of THE WHYS WAY. A big WHY is — why don’t the central bankers and others ask themselves these questions and provide the answers? Does everyone just assume that deflation is bad and if so, WHY?As this is a book review, it is not the place to seek to answer those questions beyond what is given for review purposes. Suffice to say that this book clearly and simply explains “the basic method for figuring out WHY things happen and WHY things are the way they are.” It should be read and recommended as widely as possible.
