I bought both this as well as the Fodors guide and I would highly recommend this over the Fodors South Africa guide. This is packed full of so much more and has tons of detailed maps and color photos throughout. Definitely get for any trip to South Africa!

By david The rough guide has more pages than the main competitor and the use of single column right across the page also means more words per page as well! This guide does a great job of covering the large variety of cultural, historical and adventure/game safari park activity in south africa. I found it very valuable that the scenery along the major road routes is also well described to help you decide which way to choose when going between two locations which is always a handy guide feature. Lots of inset maps all the reader to follow the text and relate it back to the spatial layout on the ground to help with stringing together the order of things visited BUT unfortunately the linkage between maps a text is not good and results in a lot of wasted scan time trying to find and read things on the maps:first. make the route numbers for the roads on the map a bit larger so can be more easily read since currently are displayed in very tiny boxes .second. mark on the map the geographic elements such a s 'whale coast, 'overburg, 'garden route' etc, that the text headers are using to present the written data, so the link between text and map more easily seenthird. why not put a grid around the maps (with letters downwards A-Z) and number across (1-10) so that locations listed in the text can be quickly found rather than sometimes taken several minutes of scanning eg. Oudtshoorn (Map 162: E4)?other than this one major annoyance I found the guide completely adequate to plan my upcoming holiday so well done on cramming in all the information on the amazing variety south africa has to offer into one guide that is detailed enough to all that is needed.happy travelsdavid in melbourne australia
