Reading the Novel-Maker’s Handbook is like spending time with a brilliant and accomplished editor By ralph vardis Reading the Novel-Maker’s Handbook is like spending time with a brilliant and accomplished editor. Her wisdom and experience is imparted casually but carefully, in an easy-to-understand manner.O’Connell takes authors through the planning stage of novel-writing, and then helps them check-in as they struggle with character development, dialogue, description, etc. She offers real-life examples from her work as an editor. The Handbook doesn’t even have to be read sequentially – I read a section here, there, etc., picking up advice when and where I needed it.As a writer, I don’t always know what I’m doing right and wrong. The Novel-Maker’s Handbook taught me how to critically examine my own manuscript, to find potential flaws and then fix them. For example, after I read the section on “The Big Picture,” I was able to finally write a decent pitch. I highly recommend this book for all writers.

O'Connell First, let me say that despite our shared last names Diane and I aren't related in any way that I can determine.Without question, this is the best book I've ever read on how to write fiction. It is straightforward, insightful and well organized. Diane covers everything from story structure, to point of view, to description, dialogue, and even how to be an effective writer and handle rejection. I found her approach to splitting up writing into: 1) outlining scenes; 2) writing a sketch draft; 3) writing each scene again from the emotional/psychological perspective of each character; and then 4) putting 2 & 3 together, and then enhancing/refining, to be very liberating. She really does a fantastic job of separating right and left brain activities to come up with a complete story.I've read a number of books on writing fiction. Steven King's "On Writing" was my previous favorite. That book is more about what it takes to be a writer. This book tells you how to write, and it does an incredible job of it. I strongly recommend this to anyone who aspires to be a novelist - or even to those who already are.

Dalkin This book teaches more than technique, it shows one how to create a story arc that is found in most successful stories. Ms. O'Connell also gives specific examples of how to work through drafts. create scenes, choose characters, and finally, how to face rejection and not give up hope. It's motivational, and useful and has given me more tools to stay disciplined in my writing. It's notable that the Independent Publisher awarded their 2015 "IPPY" Gold Medal to The Novel Maker's Handbook, under the Writing / Publishing category. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to actually complete their novel.
