About the Author
Since 1979, Glenn Randall has combined his love of the wilderness with his passion for photography to create stunning landscape images. His intimate knowledge of atmospheric optics, weather conditions, and the landscapes he photographs allows him to find an intersection between magical light and stunning subject matter, which results in exceptional images.Glenn's work has been included in calendars for Audubon, Avalanche, Barnes & Noble, Brown Trout, Sierra Club, Nature Conservancy, and Runner's World. His images have been published in Audubon, GEO, Outdoor Photographer, Outside, SKI, Los Angeles Times Magazine, National Geographic Adventure, New York Times Magazine, and many others. Obregon Given the number of landscape photographs that are taken just by travelers, one would understand if books on landscape photography outnumbered all other genres, except perhaps, portraits. Yet looking back at just my own reviews, I'm surprised by the paucity of newly published books on the subject.It looks like this book might satisfy a great need, but given its slightly idiosyncratic nature it might not be appropriate for a wide audience. The book begins explaining how to find extraordinary landscapes with a chapter on visualization, which given Ansel Adams staking out of the term, might better be called reconnaissance. Chapters follow on light, composition, exposure, taking high contrast scenes, panoramas, night landscapes and the psychology of landscapes.Randall's images are quite beautiful and illustrate that he knows what he is talking about. However, his discussions are not for beginners. For example in the chapter on exposure he presumes the reader knows how to set shutter, aperture and ISO to get a reasonable exposure. Instead he deals with the problems created by the fact that the range of light for landscapes often exceeds what cameras can capture, and so he offers strategies for dealing with these problems. Similarly, although he mentions certain techniques for processing landscapes in Lightroom and Photoshop, one had better have some experience with these software packages to take advantage of his advice.Sometimes his advice seems a bit out of the ordinary, as when he advises tone mapping 32-bit merged high dynamic range photographs in Lightroom. I was surprised to find that this was an excellent suggestion for realistic images, although I had always labored to tone map such images in Photomatix. (On the other hand, it is possible to create stunning images that appear realistic, that may be beyond Lightroom's capabilities.) The Lightroom advice made particular sense coming from Randall who appears to believe that an image should be as close to the reality of the scene (whatever that is) as possible.All though Randall is clearly an artist, he is also somewhat of a technician. Sometimes this left me befuddled as when he explained how to calculate the location of the moon in the sky in mountainous terrain using paper maps. Luckily, he recognized and recommended the easier process of using software like "The Photographer's Ephemeris" for such calculations.The author's experience seems to be mostly with the spectacular landscapes of the mountain west rather than with the plains or seashores or what is often called "the intimate landscape". That doesn't mean that his advice is not applicable to these scenes, but it requires some translation.I was impressed with his chapter on photographing the night sky which recognizes how the newest digital cameras allow the capture of images which was impossible in the days of film. I also found his explanation of the psychological factors effecting the viewing of photographs to be innovative, although, if the love of the savannah has been genetically imprinted, I wondered why so many people are moved by images of mountainous terrain.This book is not for beginners. It reflects the personal experiences of the author. It may be that the experienced landscape photographer may gain nothing from reading this book. On the other hand, for the experienced reader, even the chance of getting a new insight makes the book worth the effort.

By SilverHawk First, Glenn Randall is an extraordinary photographer (numerous publications and art exhibits). He has dedicated many years to learning the craft -- and he is willing to share ALL of his secrets to great photography in this book. This book is just full of great photos that not only demonstrate what kind of results you can get, but it is also full of useful and HARD to find info on how to truly take great photos. Many books just talk about the same basics as all photo books for the last 30 years... not this one! This book will teach you techniques you never knew even existed (like why you can see a twilight line at height in the mountains but not from the ground, and why rainbows form, and how light reflects off of water). This book is truly a beautiful and useful reference. I would recommend it for aspiring as well as experienced photographers. You will learn new stuff. Glenn has also perfected techniques for finding locations when the sun, light, moon, and stars are in the right position. He covers milky way and sky photography. He shows how to get perfect exposures in difficult conditions. Glenn blends the art and science of photography in a readable and useful way. This book is a landmark book, in my opinion. It will stay in my collection.

Often you find a book that shares maybe 3-5 valuable tidbits for your to focus on- this book is different. Within the first 45 pages or so, I found myself writing down many key learns. More and more great tips followed until the end. An example of this is the use of graduated ND filters...I found this section easy to understand and the tips for getting results helpful. The format of the accompanying photos and text really make well and drive home the teaching points. Glenn shares lots of tips for getting the light right for your landscape photography- when stars align to a specific location, sun rise in the sky based upon a location you want to photography- it is all about being prepared and planning well. Highly recommended book and will re-read this again to make sure I stay sharp.
