2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. this is great By Bess Clemons I love the way this is put together. It is the best practice book I've seen. When they introduce new words, you can just click on it and immediately see the meaning and the pronunciation. Later if you need a reminder, they continue to give the opportunity to look it up again instantly and effortlessly. I hope they make MANY more of these. I'll buy all of them.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. great story written in traditional characters By WR McKenzie This story takes the old tale of rip van winkle and updates it into a modern Chinese tale about a man who slept for 60 years only to awake in the 1990's. I bought all the books in this series and can't wait for them to publish more. It is a great way to keep up on my Chinese reading.

Long before the invention of printing, let alone the availability of a daily newspaper, people desired to be informed. In the pre-industrial era news was gathered and shared through conversation and gossip, civic ceremony, celebration, sermons, and proclamations. The age of print brought pamphlets, edicts, ballads, journals, and the first news-sheets, expanding the news community from local to worldwide. This groundbreaking book tracks the history of news in ten countries over the course of four centuries. It evaluates the unexpected variety of ways in which information was transmitted in the premodern world as well as the impact of expanding news media on contemporary events and the lives of an ever-more-informed public.   Andrew Pettegree investigates who controlled the news and who reported it; the use of news as a tool of political protest and religious reform; issues of privacy and titillation; the persistent need for news to be current and journalists trustworthy; and people’s changed sense of themselves as they experienced newly opened windows on the world. By the close of the eighteenth century, Pettegree concludes, transmission of news had become so efficient and widespread that European citizens—now aware of wars, revolutions, crime, disasters, scandals, and other events—were poised to emerge as actors in the great events unfolding around them.

Brilliant book By Craig Carlson Sometimes the best way to understand the meaning of something is not to go through a blow-by-blow of all its attributes, but rather to experience how it came to be. Pettegree's history of news is a breath of fresh air, especially in an age where social media has us scurrying around trying to re-invent the wheel. The most profound idea in the book is that publishers have always had to come back to center, so to speak, and serve their readers. No readers, no publisher. But that's at the base. What happens if you start a car wash with a hose and a sponge? And a competitor across the street starts theirs with a hose, sponge and soap. An arms race of car wash gear ensues to attract the most customers. News publishing has been no different. I found Pettegree's recounting of news operations throughout history especially illuminating in this time in which online pubs believe that DIY, in which there are no editors looking over your shoulder, is superior to the old-fashioned collaborative process of having editors and a staff. Historically, we're in the same cycles.

A fascinating and surprising examination of the birth of news By TechJunkie I found this book fascinating, but I've been a newspaper reporter in a major market for many years and of course it would be of interest to me. The insights are fascinating on the whys and wherefores of the spread of news. Of course the printing press was revolutionary, but this book examines the economics behind keeping those presses running. And who had the money? The merchant class which needed fast, reliable information in order to make business decisions. At the same time, the Roman empire had to move information almost as fast as it moved its troops and came up with a version of early snail mail to rule its subjects and allocate troop strength. The book, IMO, is four stars because the author is very good, but not a writer at the level of a William Manchester or a Laura Hillenbrand. This book contains great information that creates a baseline explaining so many other things about advancing civilization and the role that reliable information, spread to the masses, played.

Seen the pictures all over my Facebook account right? HA. I noticed a friend on Facebook belonged to an adult coloring group. It did intrigue me. Who didn't like to color as a child?Does it work? Yes, it does. I can tell you first hand that when you sit quietly you body is at rest it allows your mind to be at peace. I use this time to talk to my husband, as he is also coloring with me some nights. We chat or we stay quiet. I use the time to think about book review notes I am planning or sometimes nothing at all.The book starts out with a small chapter about where the images come from and the practice of meditation. I found the images in this book to be very enticing. The images they selected are inspired by the ancient art form of henna tattoos, known as mehndi. This book offers intricate patterns that show mandalas and flowers, (my personal favorite) along with symbols of nature, such as lotus blossoms. elephants and peacocks.I colored a few to share with you, so I can give you a first look at what the book has to offer. I did not receive an actual copy but only a Kindle version. I printed these pages off.Details: Product Dimensions: 8.5 x 0.2 x 8.5 inchesI would buy this adult coloring book based on what I do know.Thank you to Netgalley and Greenleaf Book Group and River Grove Books.

I really like this one it is a little different from some of the others and there is some very fine detail in a lot of the pictures, which takes it up a notch to the one I have seen. The love the cherries and the peacocks are certainly different. I think with the fine medallions are something that you could really get drawn into and spend a good deal of time in getting away from the stress of the world. I like this book

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great for those who love tangling and mehndi! By Crackers4Noël I received a preview copy from Netgalley with no obligation to review.I been working with my ill daughter using tangling and/or doodling to help her improve hand eye coordination. I had been looking into Mehndi art as inspiration and was intrigued to see some of those patterns on the front cover. In the introduction, the author discusses that this was an inspiration for the book. I had never thought of coloring the mehndi but that this is wonderful meditation for those of us who are not as artistically inclined but would like to participate in the art form. This is not a huge book but each page has very intricate design patterns that by design must be colored carefully and won't be done in mere minutes. Some of the pieces are free form while retaining the typical look of henna art. Others have wonderful designs made inside more formal shapes (like elephants or hands) that are typical seen in the recent tangling or "zen doodle" movement. I only wish it was a bit longer!

PDF Ebook Writing, Publishing, and Reading Local Gazetteers in Imperial China, 1100-1700 (Harvard East Asian Monographs), by Joseph R. Dennis

This book is the definitive study of imperial Chinese local gazetteers, one of the most important sources for premodern Chinese studies. Methodologically innovative, it represents a major contribution to the history of books, publishing, reading, and society.

By examining how gazetteers were read, Joseph R. Dennis illustrates their significance in local societies and national discourses. His analysis of how gazetteers were initiated and produced reconceptualizes the geography of imperial Chinese publishing. Whereas previous studies argued that publishing, and thus cultural and intellectual power, were concentrated in the southeast, Dennis shows that publishing and book ownership were widely dispersed throughout China and books were found even in isolated locales. Adding a dynamic element to our earlier understanding of the publishing industry, Dennis tracks the movements of manuscripts to printers and print labor to production sites. By reconstructing printer business zones, he demonstrates that publishers operated across long distances in trans-regional markets. He also creates the first substantial data set on publishing costs in early modern China―a foundational breakthrough in understanding the world of Chinese books. Dennis’s work reveals areas for future research on newly-identified regional publishing centers and the economics of book production.

Now updated with a new introduction and afterword, this award-winning examination of the nation’s largest juvenile criminal justice system in Los Angeles by a Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist is “an important book with a message of great urgency, especially to all concerned with the future of America’s children” (Booklist). In an age when violence and crime by young people is again on the rise, No Matter How Loud I Shout offers a rare look inside the juvenile court system that deals with these children and the impact decisions made in the courts had on the rest of their lives. Granted unprecedented access to the Los Angeles Juvenile Court, including the judges, the probation officers, and the children themselves, Edward Humes creates an unforgettable portrait of a chaotic system that is neither saving our children in danger nor protecting us from adolescent violence. Yet he shows us there is also hope in the handful of courageous individuals working tirelessly to triumph over seemingly insurmountable odds. Weaving together a poignant, compelling narrative with razor-sharp investigative reporting, No Matter How Loud I Shout is a convincingly reported, profoundly disturbing discussion of the Los Angeles juvenile court’s failings, providing terrifying evidence of the system’s inability to slow juvenile crime or to make even a reasonable stab at rehabilitating troubled young offenders. Humes draws an alarming portrait of a judicial system in disarray.

No Matter How Loud I Shout: A Year in the Life of Juvenile Court, by Edward Humes

Amazon.com Review This is one powerful book: it will grab you with vivid stories about individual kids, draw you in with honesty and compassion, and amaze you with alarming details about how the juvenile justice system works (or rather, doesn't work) in America. Anyone interested in the problem of crime should read Edward Humes's gripping account of how future criminals are shaped in youth, and how the system misses its chance to help them before they're lost for good. As Richard Bernstein writes in the New York Times, "There are many admirable things about Mr. Humes's book, which, despite its grim subject matter, has a narrative power that keeps you reading right to the end. One of them is that Mr. Humes is a shrewd and perceptive observer of his young subjects ... [and he] allows himself to feel sympathy for the young people whose lives and crimes he describes.... At the same time, Mr. Humes never exonerates bad children for their badness." No Matter How Loud I Shout was a finalist for the 1997 Edgar Award in Fact Crime.

From Publishers Weekly After being granted access by court order to a system that is usually closed to the public, Pulitzer prize-winning journalist Humes (Buried Secrets) spent 1994 surveying the largely futile attempts of Los Angeles to deal with its juvenile crime. He concentrates here on a few who have not let themselves be overwhelmed by the deluge of defendants-80,000 cases are pending at any given time: Judge Roosevelt Dorn, who is also a clergyman; Deputy DA Peggy Beckstrand, who finally leaves the system to work on adult cases; Probation Officer Sharon Stegall, who tries to cope with the insurmountable burden of supervising 200 juveniles; Shery Gold, a public defender who also wants to move to adult courts. Humes follows closely the cases of seven young people who were caught up in the system, three of whom have been saved by it?maybe. First serial to Glamour and L.A. Magazine. Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Humes investigates the Los Angeles Juvenile Court?the largest in the country?by telling the stories of five young offenders who have passed through its halls.Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

27 of 30 people found the following review helpful. This book helped me to understand why I was a victim By J. Gutierrez I was one of the victims listed in this book. It was an accurate account of what happened from my point of view and gave me some insight into what two affluent teenagers were doing robbing me at gunpoint in a "supposedly" low crime part of Los Angeles, The Palos Verdes Peninsula. We've since moved and my children are grown with families of their own now. It's no fun looking at "the stupid end" of a gun & one especially in an unsophisticated teenagers hand. My story in the book just goes to prove that the more money you have for defense the better deal you're going to get, period. For the record, our family has been changed forever. I'm a lot more cynical toward someone who looks like a "gang-banger" irrespective of their race. My children have a hatred toward Koreans even though they are Asian (We are Filipinos) themselves and I'm afraid that that bias will be transferred to my grandchildren, I certainly hope not.I just hope the two young men that robbed me that evening will turn their lives around and become productive members of society. My late Grandfather once told me that even though I would not always be able to provide every material wish for my children just spending time loving them would serve them well as adults and it has.Thank God I'm still alive to write this. It all could have been so different.I hope none of you have to experience what we have. God bless you all.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Good systems book By Eric Karl Chambers Let me start by saying that I really enjoyed this book. Mr. Humes is a wonderful writing who has the skills to draw the reader in in such a way as to "experience" the things he is writing about. Readers, though, ought to be aware that this is a book about a very specific system-the California Juvenile Justice System-which as most people in the field know is substantially different than, say the juvenile system in Topeka, Kansas. I think part of the book's utility, and the reason I think anyone in the field out to read it, is the way in which Humes makes salient the individuals that make up the larger system in much the way Marc Parent did in Turning Stones.

11 of 13 people found the following review helpful. there has to be a better way By A Customer This is the quintessential book for me. All I can say is that everyone and no one is responsible for the plight of kids like "George Trevino". His impossible situation haunted me, surfacing raw emotions. Why do we turn our backs on kids like this? We need to find an answer fast before we transform conscientious orphans into delinquents whose only dominant emotion is hate. Where is George now? Has he given up on the system yet? I hope not. Every time I think of his disadvantaged life I need an easy culprit to lay the blame on, when in reality I should be holding the person in the mirror accountable...

Pimsleur® equals success. Just one 30-minute lesson a day gets you speaking and understanding like no other program. This course includes Lessons 1-16 from the Danish Level 1 program - 8 hours of audio-only effective language learning with real-life spoken practice sessions. Each lesson provides 30 minutes of spoken language practice, with an introductory conversation, and new vocabulary and structures. Detailed instructions enable you to understand and participate in the conversation. Practice for vocabulary introduced in previous lessons is included in each lesson. Topics include: greetings, numbers, meals, shopping, telling time, scheduling activities, and asking and giving directions. The emphasis is on pronunciation and comprehension, and on learning to speak Danish. Reading Lessons begin at the end of Lesson 11 to provide you with an introduction to reading Danish. The Reading Booklet to be used with the audio Reading Lessons must be downloaded. The Danish Language Danish, a North Germanic language based on Old Norse, is spoken by some 6 million people, primarily in Denmark, although there are some speakers in Norway, Sweden, the Faroese Islands, and Greenland. Within the country of Denmark, there are many different dialects spoken. Generally, the newscast or Standard Danish (also referred to as rigsdansk), which is based on the dialects spoken in and around Copenhagen, is considered the most desirable dialect. This course adheres as closely as possible to Standard Danish. Because of the large number of similarities between Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish, knowledge of any one of these languages makes it possible to understand the others.
