9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Meunier contenues to pave the way to success By Christopher Detrick I reviewed the first book in this series "Write Short Kindle Books" and while the writing voice and tone of the books were excellent, some of the material covered in the book felt a bit redundant.I'm sure Meunier didn't read my review and make any changes because of it, but Indie Author Success Strategies seems to directly address my criticism. The book is divided into 19 different "chapters" or tips, which each one delivering new and, more importantly, helpful information. All while having Meunier's easy to read conversationalist style of writing I've become a fan of.The book will take about two hours to sit through, but if you're in The business of self-publishing on Amazon Kindle then this is a must have. Meunier distills his experiences and tips into helpful chapters, complete with his hit-or-miss humor that manages to spruce up the book. Even if you're rolling your eyes at his jokes, you may find yourself smiling like I was. This book would be a must have if one thing didn't stick out and kind of irk me. In this book Meunier relates personal experiences in his writing of other books. This is fine, until you realize that he's plugging his own previous book for the third time in a row, complete with link. He casually mentions other kindle books, one by name, but leaves out a link. I get that this is kind of the whole point of indie publishing and gaining readers, but each time I saw a link to another one of his books, I felt a little jarred. But this is such a small thing compared to how helpful this book can be to potentially thousands of new authors looking to break in the kindle market.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Common Sense By Sarah B A short common sense guide for self-published authors who want to maximize their profits from nonfiction ebooks.Nathan Meunier's Indie Author Success Strategies is one of his handful of how-to guides for making money as a self-published author. One look at his bibliography is enough to know that Meunier takes his own advice: his book covers are bright and professional, his titles are snappy, and he's found a niche market. Although he's a poster child for the efficacy of the strategies he touts in his 74-page ebook, there are few revelatory gems in this list of 19 tips and 70 bonus "action tips." Luckily for potential readers, Meunier's books are priced inexpensively. It would be hard to justify paying for advice that can be summed up in a few obvious bullet points: avoid poor grammar, identify and cater to your audience, cover design, cover design, cover design. The most valuable morsels Meunier offers are the specific editing, listserv, and cover design tools whose names are scattered throughout the action tips and may be unfamiliar to the intermediate author. The rest of the book, although well-written, passes in an unremarkable stream of unsupported and unspecific advice about expanding one's social network and building an author platform. Meunier eschews industry research that might have led him to original insight, preferring instead to recount simple parables that can be typed up in the span of an afternoon. Rather than providing step-by-step instructions for increasing SEO, Meunier says merely that one should "pay close attention" to search terms and bestseller rankings. Rather than offering an analysis of author branding in relation to company branding or even making an example out of his own brand decision process, Meunier suggests simply being "mindful" of your author brand across platforms. As an established ebook author, Meunier is surely capable of well-supported, thoughtful, and original advice, but to spend the time producing it would have been contrary to his formula for churning out attractive bite-sized books in the self-publishing hustle.Meunier fails to see the irony that in writing such a facile survey of self-publishing, he is living proof that making money from nonfiction ebooks is less a literary career than a scrappy entrepreneurial marketing game, a niche with limited room for Meunier's intended readers as it's already crowded by people like Meunier himself.

Another great investment in my writing future By Charles Singletary Here's another addition to the growing pile of great writing career books that continue to be the foundation of my frequent references. This time Nathan adds on the Indie Author series with specific tips to boost success, again coming from a space where he's seeing these things work and implementing them first hand. The Tips that immediate jump out to me center around Target Audience and building an author platform early. Identifying my niche audience has been a struggle for me (mostly due to my eclectic habits making that a moving target most times), so Meunier's words of wisdom specifically on researching the niche BEFORE diving in ring true. Building an author platform has been growing in importance to be for a good while, with Indie Author Tips merely stacking on the wealth of knowledge I've run into. This particular Action Tip especially jumped out:"Be mindful about your author branding across different platform channels. It's always helpful to create one cohesive look and vibe to your online presence, and replicate that across your various channels. Using similar artwork, logos, imagery, color schemes, and even written messaging on your blog, social media feeds, and other platform elements will help make it easier for people to find you online. Bonus points: tie all of this into the look, feel, and content for your book and its cover too."IASS is another solid additiona to any writer's collection and guys and gals, we're making out like bandits getting them at these prices.

44 of 44 people found the following review helpful. Very musical exercises By Marc Geisler This book provides exercises with detailed notes that help a beginner to fingerpick. The exercises are very musical in that they are more like little songs themselves, and the author provides plenty of opportunity, even with the first one, to be creative and expressive. I started the 20 progressive studies by the same author, and then found this one which is a primer. I recommend this one first, as the CD has both slow and fast performances, which are really quite helpful. Also, he gives more specific notes for the right hand, using the 3-finger and 4-finger approaches. My playing has surely gotten better, and there are videos too of his playing of many of the studies on the author's site. He is also great about answering questions about his books. Doing these studies works really well with learning his Celtic Tunes book and Sanz baroque book. I couldn't be happier with it and have recommended to my ukulele orchestra colleagues, along with his other arrangements.

33 of 33 people found the following review helpful. A uke book everyone should have By Sarah This is a book every beginning to intermediate uke player should have. The exercises aren't easy. In fact, if you could play them at full speed, you'd be well on your way to a professional ukulele career. However, they are accessible to all levels at the slower speed. On the CD, Rob plays both a slow version and a fast version. An advanced beginning/intermediate player will be able to play the exercises at the slow speed with a little practice, but will be quite challeged to get them up to the faster speed. A person who is new to the ukulele will be challenged to play at the slow speed. The exercises sound so nice at the faster speed that students will be motived to keep practicing in the hopes of getting up to that faster speed. The book focuses on both left hand and right hand techniques, but it also has excercises on musicality--dynamics, playing soft to loud; accents, 3/4 vs. 6/8, for example--which is another important part of playing well. I'm working my way through the exercises. So far there is only one I can play at the faster speed. I enjoy having exercises to practice and I know they will improve my playing.

27 of 28 people found the following review helpful. Not for Beginners By Chloe H. I purchased this book after reading some of the reviews that it was appropriate for beginning uke players (to define beginner in my case-I have been playing for 6 months and am familar with a large number of chords and various strum patterns). However, this book contains no basic overview or instruction regarding how to play the fingerstyle method -- such as what the proper hand placement is or how to achieve a slide or pull-off (the latter two techniques are required begining in the first song). My recommendation is that this book is better suited for intermediate students who have already learned the basics of fingerstyle playing. The selection of songs is interesting, so I may save the book to use after I purchase a more entry-level lesson book.

T is for Time, by Roland Smith, Marie Smith

From School Library Journal Gr 2–5—This title offers an overview of concepts related to time, listed in alphabetical order: "A is for Almanac," "D is for Daylight Saving," "E is for Einstein," "G is for Greenwich Mean Time," and "K is for Kukulcan Pyramid." Accompanied by sweet, painterly illustrations that hark back to earlier eras, the entries begin with four-line rhymes and go on to clear, well-researched prose explanations, rendered in a fairly small typeface. These are simple and brief introductions to a mix of basic ideas (such as explanations of a week, a shadow, and the night sky) and much more challenging concepts (definitions of Zulu time and verge escapement). Other books in this series are geared to readers ages six to 10, but this title defies categorization: some content is straightforward, but much of it is too sophisticated for primary students. VERDICT An additional purchase where interest in time concepts is high.—Dorcas Hand, Annunciation Orthodox School, Houston, TX

About the Author Roland Smith is a former zookeeper and leading expert on red wolves as well as an author. He lives on a small farm near Portland, Oregon.

Excellent account of what we need to do for our children's health By William Podmore Sue Palmer is an experienced writer and broadcaster on children’s education. This very useful book makes a strong case for some traditional values. Our children need to develop focus, self-restraint and empathy; they need to learn to do as you would be done by; and they need presence, not presents, parents who listen and talk to their children. She recommends real food, less of sugar’s empty calories and more fish oil, eaten at family meals; play and exercise; bedtime routines; and protecting children from advertising (Sweden bans advertising to under-12s).In Finland, a teacher of nursery children must have a master’s degree. Britain, on the cheap, uses poorly-qualified, even unqualified, staff, not just in nurseries but increasingly in primary and secondary education too. Our children from age five are subjected to tests and targets: our 11-year-olds are bottom of the league for enjoying reading. In Sweden and Finland, formal education starts at seven: they are top for literacy and have smaller gaps between rich and poor and between boys and girls. But it is not just a matter of deficient parenting skills, or of a defective educational system. Why do these happen? Our competitive, long-hours, rat-race, culture is harming our children – and our adults too! When both parents have to be out working to make ends meet, the whole family suffers. As Ms Palmer says, we need family-friendly economies, not economy-friendly families. And there is the vital matter of inequality, which, unfortunately, she does not treat in this book. Britain has the third biggest gap between haves and have-nots among the 24 OECD countries; the USA has the biggest. We have the second highest child death rate; the USA has the highest. The others in the bottom six - New Zealand, Australia, Ireland and Canada - also have the ‘Anglo-Saxon’ model of unfettered free markets.Researchers from Dundee University recently pointed out, “There is a very strong association between income inequality and under-five mortality among the wealthier OECD countries. Within this group the highest child mortality figures are to be found in those ‘Anglo-American’ countries which attracted criticism in 1993 in a Unicef study on child neglect. Since 1960, the relative ranking, based on increasing under-five mortality, of these countries has markedly worsened relative to the others.” [David Collison et al, ‘Income inequality and child mortality in wealthy nations’, Journal of Public Health, published online 13 March.] In 1993, we were 15th, we are now joint 22nd. This decline happened equally under Conservative and Labour governments.Perhaps our whole social model is wrong. Perhaps we should stop looking to the USA’s failed social model. We do need to change things and as she writes, “Nobody ever changed anything by sitting around bemoaning the status quo.”

Hope Edges Out Toxic Helplessness By Dr Conrade Yap Sue Palmer's book is a fascinating and intelligent look at how the world we are living in can 'toxify' our children. Presenting multiple statistics from a wide range of disciplines, the author provides the reader with a compelling look at the slow and dangerous potential, ordinary stuff can harm our kids over the long run. Ordinary stuff like junk food, high sugars and unhealthy fats can impact the development of the brain and physical wellness.Stuff like lack of sleep that impairs the child's natural development. Stuff like lack of play that undermines the physical limbs, through visual stimulation and makes the body passive through couch-potato activities like TV and electronic devices. All of these ultimately places unhealthy tensions in the normal development of a typical family.Palmer blends in statistical data, social analysis and identifies many salient pointers on how modern society is poisoning the minds and hearts of children. Thankfully, this book is no horror flick that ends tragically. The author suggests ways to detoxify the kids, the addicted. She also highlights effective and useful tips for parents to correct any unhealthy 'toxic childhood.' This element of redeeming the children is the single best reason to read the book. Read it to be shocked by what modern culture is subtly doing to our children. Read it to be wowed by ways we can redeem the children while we can. Read it to be encouraged, that hope will outlive the seemingly endless spiral of helplessness. If I were to critique this book, I think it is focused more on the Western culture, a society of haves rather than the have-nots. The 'modern world' the book assumes is only about one-third of the world's population. There are other more serious problems the rest of the world deals with. Things like poverty, and basic water and electricity resources. Physical pollution and environmental concerns are also high on that list. If I were to exclude all of these, there is still a missing component in this book. What about the soul? What about the spiritual realm? On what basis of moral thinking do we view toxic childhood? On this basis, 'Toxic Childhood' sees the whole situation more from a scientific and psychological perspective. I assert that this alone is insufficient. We need more. Yes, I will readily admit that I am biased toward seeing life from God's perspective. In other words, Palmer's motivation to write the book stems from a desire to help us care for the next generation. If we see from God's perspective, we will learn to care for ALL generations.conrade

Although it was written a few years back, the commentary is still valid today, if not more so. Anyone involved in raising or educating children ought to read this book. The examples and advise given are practice and without condescension.Today's children are our next generation of adults. They will be the ones running our countries as we age. Invest in them now with your time, attention and dose of understanding about how our modern conveniences have lead us to overlook some of the simple but attention intensive aspects of raising kids. Raising children is not just one more thing to add to the list of things we can add to our multi-tasking list. Sue Palmer explains why.
