The Napoli Unplugged Guide to Naples is not your typical guidebook. Written for the intrepid traveller seeking a more profound experience, the NU Guide delves deep deep enough to catch the cultural heartbeat of the city. It's a must-have for anyone with more than just a passing interest in Naples and you ll want to revisit the book again and again, long after your return home. There s also plenty here to satisfy the wanderlust of armchair travellers.
- Written by four women united by a common passion, Napoli, who love to wax lyrical about their adoptive city, it makes you feel you re seeing Naples through the eyes of your best friends.
- Their own enthusiasms are multiple: art, archaeology and architecture; history and mythology; music, dance and theatre; food and wine, the islands and the beach even shopping and each subject has its narrative moment in the spotlight.
- The prose is embellished by many beautiful photographs, urban sketches and plein-air paintings by artists who couldn t resist the siren call of Parthenope.
- Rambles Through the City explores Naples by the neighbourhood, its historic and municipal centres as well as its hill districts and it is enhanced by creative cartography to orient the reader;
- Outings in the Outskirts dives into the Bay of Naples and a bit beyond: the Vesuvius Excavations, the Phlegraean Fields and the glories of the Amalfi Coast;
- Ventures in a Different Vein feeds the mind and delights the senses with a section dedicated entirely to Naples history;
- Finally, the authors outline an immersion course in the city s music, theatre and food and wine cultures.

Go to Naples, Buy This Book By Debra Bernardi I used to edit a line of major travel guides for a living—and I must say the Napoli Unplugged Guide to Naples is the BEST guide to the city on the market. Where most guides focus on the Amalfi Coast--the main destination for so many tour groups--this is a book for someone lucky enough to have time to spend in the fantastic city of Naples. And with its graceful writing and beautiful illustrations, this is also the guide for lovers of Naples (like myself!) who want to explore their city in greater depth--even if by armchair far away. Bonnie Alberts has the right background for putting this book together: she loves living in Naples; she is an American ex-pat, so she understands the perspectives of visitors to the city; and she is the creator of Napoli Unplugged, the English-language website for all info about life in Naples.Most of the NU Guide is organized by city neighborhoods, helping a visitor organize sightseeing. It covers all the famous sights, from the seafront to the Duomo, but goes well beyond to the strange and little-known, with history and cultural stories woven throughout. The book introduces us to Neapolitan street musicians and artists. It points out unusual sights, such as the wheel of esposti, an opening in a church door where parents abandoned their children in the nineteenth century. And it tells us story after story, about everything from the liquefaction of San Gennaro’s blood to the Neapolitan resistance during World War II. For those looking for more unusual approaches to the city, the book includes a section on touring Naples Underground and a tour centered around mythical and actual Neapolitan women.The NU Guide to Naples goes outside the city to well-known nearby sights and ends with recommendations about theater, music, and food from Alberts and her team. If you are going Naples, have been to Naples, dream of going to Naples, this is the book you want to buy.

I only wish there were better maps so I could more easily figure out where the authors are talking about. The maps inside are drawn/painted and not very detailed.

Discover the soul of Naples with Napoli Unplugged By PBD The renowned Italian architect and broadcaster Francesco da Mosto believes that if Rome is the heart of Italy then Naples is her soul. To those of us who have lived there this is obvious - to anyone who visits, especially for the first time, you need more than a run of the mill factual guidebook to help you dig deep and un-earth the riches that lie literally below the surface, and behind the mysterious walls of Naples' narrow alleys. Napoli Unplugged will allow you to take unimaginable journeys of discovery where all your 5 senses will be sated in this city where life is lived in glorious cacophony on the streets but where tranquillity can be sought in Churches, cloisters, Art galleries, museums, gardens and catacombs reached through secret doors. Each clearly laid out and well illustrated chapter is a treasure hunt through the city and beyond, allowing you for example, to discover antiquities, which, were it not for the popularity of Pompeii would be heaving with tour groups; places like Villa Oplontis and Cuma. Turn a blind eye to chaotic development and imagine yourself on the Grand Tour, there's still enough of Naples' surrounding volcanic landscape to explore, and if markets and seafood restaurants are your thing, these pages will lead you to them. Then there is the beauty of the bay, and three islands to explore by boat...you will need a long holiday, or several trips, to do justice to the contents of Napoli Unplugged...but go there before Naples' soul is diluted by mass tourism, and if you only have space in your luggage for one guidebook, this should be it.
