About the Author Rachel Aimee cofounded $pread magazine in 2004 and was an editor-in-chief for four and a half years. Now a parent and freelance copy editor, she also organizes for strippers’ rights with We Are Dancers. She lives in Brooklyn.Eliyanna Kaiser is a former executive editor of $pread magazine. She is currently raising her two children in Manhattan. In her spare time, she writes fiction.Audacia Ray is the founder and executive director of the Red Umbrella Project (RedUP), a peer-led organization in New York that amplifies the voices of people in the sex trades through media, storytelling, and advocacy programs. At RedUP, she publishes the literary journal Prose & Lore: Memoir Stories About Sex Work. She is the author of Naked on the Internet: Hookups, Downloads, and Cashing in On Internet Sexploration and has contributed to many anthologies. She joined the $pread staff in 2004 and was an executive editor from 2005 to 2008.

When Sex Workers Speak By OutlawPoet I had never heard of $pread, but I was interested in this book, simply because it promised first person essays from people I don't know much about - those working in the sex industry.Now, because of my unfamiliarity with $pread, I have to admit that I found the initial introduction and history to be just a little tedious. I really didn't care about what lead them to create their magazine or how it transformed. I just wanted to hear the voices of the people in the industry.But you need to keep reading past the introduction because the essays are amazing. They come from everyone from strippers to prostitutes to adult film actors. They talk about race, age, and taboos. They are heartfelt and hopeless and every last one of them comes from someone who is smart, savvy, and has something important to say to the world.You'll never look at sex work the same again.One of the most fascinating essays is 'Stripping While Brown' by Mona Salim, as she lets the reader know her experience as one of the few Indian women stripping in New York. The reactions of clients and employers was eye-opening, as was her unique experience of many of the stereotypes that exist in the industry.In fact, race is a large part of quite a few of the essays as they explore how white adult actors are treated (and paid) in comparison with black or Asian actors.Other essays deal with reactions of family and friends, once the truth of their jobs is revealed.Every essay has merit, though some few can be hard to read. These woman meet with prejudice, violence, and social disdain on a regular basis.Sex workers become the buyer's sexual fantasy. They are walking, talking dolls and it can be incredibly hard for people to think of the human who lives behind the lingerie, cameras, and sex toys. $pread reminds you that not only are these women human, but they are smart and funny mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends.A worthwhile book that deserves a wide audience!*ARC Provided by Publisher for review purposes.

Really informative read By SD What started as a quarterly intent on illuminating the sex industry, $pread magazine quickly became a known voice for the sex workers’ rights movement and a media platform upon which the women and men of this oft stigmatized community could speak for themselves. Raw yet delicate, $pread achieved its aim and is now known as the publication that sparked a media revolution, exposing the diverse opinions of workers in this industry “outside the system.”Although its final publication was in 2009, $pread’s impact remains strong. Now, six years later, the best of $pread is compiled in this smart, funny, and heartbreaking anthology. Spanning several different countries with multiple nuanced cultures, this compilation intelligently explores social theories and cultural conventions that help create the sex industry yet also paradoxically break its boundaries. I highly recommend reading this to anyone who is curious to learn about the sex industry from sex workers themselves. It's an eye-opening anthology!

Having had little exposure to the sex industry outside of popular media and cultural prejudices, I was unprepared for the diversity of stories--some of them absurdly funny and tender, others startlingly revealing--found throughout the pages of $pread. To be offered first-hand insight into one of the more controversial and misrepresented industries of today is rare, something to take advantage of. From essays that detail the racial discrimination burrowing beneath the glitter of the strip club and the precarious balancing of the professional and private, to tales of anarchist fetishes and encounters gone wrong, $pread has it all; this is not simply an important read, but a necessary one.
