I own several books of writing prompts but this one is unique in its presentation. Instead of just a sentence or two, each prompt also contains a related quote and picture or illustration. I think this is an excellent idea and find it much more inspiring than a page full of one liners. I recommend this book to any writer especially those who, like me, get stuck for an idea.

It was in my early writing that I discovered the truth in that statement. I came to the world of fiction late. Not really certain why, but I admit to being mostly a technical writer. SOPs, grants, operator manuals, maintenance manuals ... it didn't matter. If it needed writing, I wrote it. I moved on to writing online study courses and newspaper columns. Then fiction raised its head and I fell into the gaping maw of uncertainty. That's the way it goes. The transformation from tightly structured, rigid, stilted words to smooth, carefully crafted, flowing prose was not easy and indeed is not yet complete. One of the toughest things to do is generate ideas and confine them to the written page while allowing them to run freeform through the reader's stream of consciousness and still maintain a semblance of form acceptable to "normal" convention. I am not happy where I am in this process. So, when I was shown this book I decided to make a run at "improving the improvisation" and settled in to read and discover what I didn't know.If you are not a writer (or a prospective writer..) you will probably wonder what this is all about. But even if you stumble on this book by accident, there is still something here for you. You don't have to take part in the writing exercises to gain something from this book. If you just read the quotes and study the images, you will have received more than that for which you paid. On the other hand, if you ARE a writer you have in your hands a book of quotes and ideas that stimulate and excite. Ideas that once consumed tend to percolate and cause just enough internal agitation to make you want to sit down and write something. There are no characters here. No plot lines or back stories. Just ideas. Ideas for characters and ideas for plots and ideas for settings. Ideas for stories that need to be written. But that's not all you get....More than the ideas presented, I think the most valuable part of this book are the quotes at the start of each of the exercises. It is an impressive collection. Some of them are old favorites and bring to mind either soothing memories or discordant ones. Others are new and create no such memories but rather pleasant feelings of discovery. No matter which camp you find yourself in, the quotes will serve you well.If you read this book, and moreover if you take part in some of the exercises, you will find yourself in a much improved place and state of mind. Your mind will be more flexible and ready to bend and mold characters and themes into plots and stories. If you go with it and allow yourself to fully participate, you will gain insight and stimulation and clarity of thought. These things, and others, necessary for the creative pursuit of improvisational fiction.HIGHLY recommended.

Now, after reading this book and highlighting dozens of passages, I have another 30 or so book and story ideas to write about. There's no way I'll get to them all. But what a creative joy it was to go through such an inspirational read. The author says, "Speculative fiction allows us to go to where the magic is." That's where I like to go, at least for some life-endowing moments. Because "...these stories must ultimately reconnect us to our humanity."So many quotes are so beautiful, or scary -- sometimes the same thing. Take this one: "Ms. Fang is the nicest, sweetest teacher at Scary School. She only ate twelve kids last year." (Derek the Ghost, Scary School). "The last unicorn lived in a lilac wood and she lived all alone." (Peter S. Beagle, The Last Unicorn.) Such a line goes right into the core of something inside me. "All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream." (Edgar Allan Poe.)So what do I have here to roil my imagination? 167 quotes like the above, with 167 writing prompts giving me concepts for stories, and 167 photos and art pieces -- and so many are overwhelming in their beauty, or horror, or nostalgia, or driving within me a need to become a part of the fantastic world protrayed.I HAVE ONE QUESTION: Why are all the women, even the evil ones, in these photos so gol-darned beautiful, enticing and, yes, even sexy? But that gives me a concept for another story. This one might be called: "A Hollywood Icon Falls in Love with the Ugliest Woman in the Universe."
