It tells the story of numerous popular songs, showing how each one attracted its first audience, how that audience filtered, edited, and returned each song to the singer, and how the singer then altered it until it became not only popular but a classic. Kirby also deals entertainingly with the singers themselves and how their sometimes rough lives resulted in their first songs. He then goes how to show, very entertainingly, how their ability to transcend themselves and react to the world around them produced their later, greater songs. An enthralling read for pop music fans.

I come across a really great interview on NPR By karen Walker Sometimes when I’m being comforted by my car radio while running errands, I come across a really great interview on NPR, and the odd thing is I have no idea who the person is being interviewed, but the interviewer is so good that the interviewee becomes a person that I must get to know.David Kirby is that kind of biographer. I love music, but I knew little to nothing of the musical lives of John Henry, Big Bill Broonzy, Bob Mould, or Georgia Turner, and I could have gone on with my life just fine without ever getting to know them at all. However, when you listen to St. Paul and the Broken Bones or even Lady Gaga, it’s good to know about some of the unsung heroes who paved their yellow brick roads.Kirby is a masterful word slinger and the mini music biographies he crafts in “Cross Road: Artist, Audience, and The Making of American Music” will make every music lover appreciate the shoulders of the legendary American music giants which contemporary artists stand on.“Cross Road” is also a must for readers who want to gain background and insight into David Kirby’s fantastic books of poetry (See Amazon for more details including the recently released, “Get Up Please.”

I started scanning it and suddenly was totally immersed in the creation of the blues/folk song "John Henry." A very cool book.
